What is the Health Care Human Resources Committee of Waterloo Wellington?

The Health Care Human Resources Committee of Waterloo Wellington is a local committee that provides its members with a forum for discussing local human resources issues in health care.

The primary areas of discussion revolve around:

  • HR issues and concerns
  • Marketing Waterloo and Wellington as a health care employment destination
  • Coordinating recruitment and training needs within the sector where possible.

Who is on the committee?

The committee members come from the various areas of health care, including, but not limited to:

  • Hospitals
  • Long-term Care
  • Community Care Access Centre
  • At home care
  • Community Health Centres
  • EMS
  • Addictions and mental health support services

The human resources representatives are influencers who can help initiatives come to fruition within their respective organizations. The minutes of the committee are available to anyone involved in aspects of human resources in health care who would like to be on the distribution list and will be posted on HealthLine.

We are also looking at inviting our colleagues from Dufferin County to join us. The Workforce Planning Board of Waterloo Wellington Dufferin provides support to this committee.

How did the Committee come into being?

Over the past 4 years, the Workforce Planning Board has been engaged in research and industry consultations and has spent that time building upon the HR strategy work completed by the Waterloo Wellington LHIN.

In 2008, WPB released the report “Demand for Healthcare Workers in Waterloo Wellington 2008 to 2017” which studied the demand for workers in 16 health care occupations over the ten (10) year period. The study determined that demand for health care workers would be greatest in the period 2013 to 2017 and that “the less challenging environment of 2008 to 2012 represents the last opportunity to prepare for the rapidly rising demand”.

The results of this study lead to a Health Care Career Symposium where representatives from health care organizations met to discuss the human resources issues and challenges presented in the report.  In 2009, a second consultation was held with the industry to discuss the next steps in implementing some of the ideas that came from the symposium discussions. Many of the actions outlined the need for more collaboration between the diverse groups around human resources challenges within health care.

Out of that consultation came the creation of the Health Care HR Committee. The first meeting, held in August 2012, invited a number of participants from across the industry to be a part of the committee. The current committee consists of 12 members and a number of other organizations are on the minutes distribution list.
